AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To examine the historical and social contributions of the veterinary profession beyond clinical practice by exploring the lives of individuals whose scientific achievements, humanistic values, and civic responsibility have left a lasting impact on the development of society.
METHODS: A historical-biographical and documentary analysis of archival materials, scientific publications, periodicals, and personal testimonies was conducted during the preparation of the book ‘With Scalpel, Pen and Honor.’ The study covers the period from the late 19th to the early 21st century.
RESULTS: The biographies of 72 distinguished Bulgarian individuals with veterinary medical education and significant contributions to science, diplomacy, literature, the arts, and public life were examined. Particular attention is given to Dr. Nedyu Boyadzhiev, whose humanitarian and diplomatic activities contributed to the release of Bulgarian prisoners of war following World War I. The historical examples analyzed reveal the multifaceted social role of the veterinary profession and its contributions beyond traditional professional boundaries.
CONCLUSION: The historical-biographical study demonstrates that the social significance of the veterinary profession extends beyond the diagnosis and treatment of animals. The integration of scientific competence, ethical principles, and humanism strengthens professional identity and social responsibility. Preserving historical memory contributes to professional continuity and the development of the values of future generations of medical professionals.
