Alexander Katzarov, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor in Clinic of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Military Medical Academy Sofia

Local ablation is a minimally invasive procedure, which allows destruction of pathological lesions located in different organs. This can be achieved with chemical or thermal methods. Today the two widely used techniques for ablation are radiofrequency and microwave. The principle of action is different between the two methods, but the main goal is the same rising in temperature of the targeted lesion which leads to protein denaturation and cell death.

Although surgical resection remains the gold standard for treatment of liver lesions ablations is effective in selective cases not suitable for surgery. Candidates for the manipulation are high risk patients not suitable for surgery with local disease confined to the liver without extrahepatic lesions and low tumor volume. In patients conducting chemotherapy ablation is a complementary modality and is necessary because of statistically significant prolongation in life expectancy.
