Capt. Georgi Popivanov, MD, PhD is born in 1976 in Mezdra. He graduates from Medical University-Pleven in 2000. For three years after graduation he works in Emergency medicine in Omurtag and Popovo. From 2003 to 2008 he specializes Surgery in the clinic of Emergency surgery in Military Medical Academy-Sofia. From 2010 he is an officer in the Bulgarian Army and from 2015 is an assistant professor in the clinic of Endoscopic, Endocrine surgery and Coloproctology in Military Medical Academy-Sofia. From 2014 Dr. Popivanov is an honorary assistant professor at Medical Faculty of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. In 2016 he defends a PhD dissertation on the topic “Comaparative analysis of blast, gunshot conventional trauma. From 2016 he is a secretary of the Bulgarian national board of the Balkan military medical committee.


As a military surgeon he has many missions in Afghanistan as part of the staff of many multinational hospitals in Herat, Qandahar and Kabul as well as in Kiev, Ukraine.


Dr. Popivanov’s scientific interests are in the area of military and trauma surgery, open abdomen, coloproctology, oncology and biliary-hepatic surgery. He has 66 publications in textbooks, monographies, Bulgarian and foreign periodic journals with impact factor 12,25. He has been cited 81 times in international journals. He is a member of the editorial boards and a reviewer at the journals: Military Medical Research (China), Endocrine surgery (USA), International Journal of Surgery & Medicine (Bulgaria) and International Wound Journal (UK).
